Office Manager: Debbie Doubleday
I have worked in the education industry for 14 years through working at both local college and primary schools. I feel like I have both a professional and personal link to Northcote Intermediate as both my children went through this fantastic school 10 and 8 years ago. While at Northcote Intermediate my children grew with their education and cemented friendships that they still hold to this day.
Throughout the last two years that I have been here I have discovered that this school is built on the foundations of great staff, students and parents that are incredibly supportive. At Northcote Intermediate we strive for excellence in providing the best education for our students in order to help them transition into college and NCEA Standards. My door in the office is always open and I love seeing our students achieve high, gain independence and enjoy coming to school everyday.

Tēnā koutou katoa.
I am excited to be a part of the Northcote Intermediate team and work within the Northcote community. Both of my two children have been through Northcote Primary and it is great to see some familiar faces here.
I believe the intermediate years are an integral time in a students life, where they begin to develop who they will be as a young adult. This is my fifth year working at this level and I enjoy seeing students' grow, whilst helping them develop the skills they need for both secondary school and life.
Whilst I enjoy all learning areas, I have a passion for Te Ao Māori and Sport. I am looking forward to being a part of developing these areas further at Northcote Intermediate.

Room 2: Matthew Cawkwell
Matthew Cawkwell is working on his blurb...and has been since his arrival at NIS in 2014.
Room 3: Kim Summerville
My name is Kim Summerville and I am excited to have joined the NIS team this year. I was a student here many years ago so it feels like a natural fit to be back here teaching within the community I love.
We are extremely lucky here at Northcote Intermediate to have an incredible wealth of experience, passion and knowledge within our teaching team, so when the opportunity came along to be a part of it, it was a no brainer. The special thing about this school is the great mix of cultures and experiences that the kids and their whanau bring to the classroom. I feel very privileged to not only be teaching the kids but learning from my students too as we practice ako - learning and teaching side by side.

Room 5: Aisha Bower
My name is Aisha Bower, and I am so excited to be a new classroom teacher in Room 9. For me it's a bit of a shock to the system, because it doesn't seem long ago that I was a student here myself! I have been lucky enough to be both a student teacher and a reliever at Northcote Intermediate School, so it seemed only natural for me to transition into a full time teacher at a school which is the home to so many of my childhood memories.
Since graduating, I have been playing netball in the ANZ Championship for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, which has seen me live in the mighty Waikato for 6 months of the year. I am forever grateful for the experiences that I had down in Hamilton, and I can now say that have achieved my dream of playing professional netball. Unfortunately a knee injury that required surgery cut my season short this year, however this gave me the opportunity to rediscover my love for teaching and I was able to come home and relieve here while I was rehabbing. With every intention to go back to netball, a few months at NIS was all it took for me to fall back in love with the community here, and I quickly found myself choosing teaching over netball.
I am really looking forward to meeting you all, and working in such an awesome community.
Room 7: Kat Naylan
Kat Naylan has been teaching for 12 years. Prior to teaching, she was in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, as Military Police. Kat is the Team Leader of Motutapu team, who has a passion for Te Reo Maori, Sport and Mathematics. She endeavours to create an enjoyable yet challenging environment for all children in her class.
Kat is the Teacher in Charge of Sport at N.I.S. She is involved in coaching a number of our sports teams including softball, volleyball, hockey and the Sports Camp team. She thinks that it is important for all children to be a part of as many things as they can at intermediate.

Room 8: Conor McHoull
I am Conor McHoull. I'm stoked to be a part of the crew at NIS and I am excited for the adventures ahead. I have been lucky enough to be part of the Northcote community for almost seven years now, working in the area while training to become a teacher and also spending two years working at Northcote Primary School. Obviously the natural progression from Northcote Primary was to the mighty Northcote Intermediate - I had previously heard many awesome things about the students, teaching staff and community.
I have quickly come to find that Intermediate and Primary schools are very different; students have begun their journey towards understanding who they are as individuals, finding their voice and identifying their passions in order to grow and leave their mark on the world. My job is not only to teach, inspire and motivate, but to facilitate the transition into adulthood and this is something that has drawn me to Intermediate school teaching.
I have many interests outside of school and I am actively involved in a range of sports such as touch, league, rugby, soccer, snowboarding, surfing and skating. I have a keen interest in ICT and anything technology related, finding ways to integrate this into the classroom to enhance teaching and promote enthusiasm for learning.
That's enough about me. I look forward to meeting you all and working with the students of NIS.
Room 9: Renee Gardiner
I am Renee Gardiner and I am excited to be a new teacher at Northcote Intermediate in 2011. I started my time at Northcote Intermediate as a teacher aide in 2008 to 2009. Over that time I was studying to become an Early Childhood Teacher at Auckland University. Throughout my time working here, I enjoyed the different aspects that primary school teaching and learning entailed so I decided to complete an extra year of study to become a primary school teacher.
Now I am able to join the dedicated staff here. I am looking forward to working alongside the supportive and enthusiastic staff, students and families at Northcote Intermediate. I treasure that N.I.S is a smaller school, as we are all able to build relationships with all the students, parents and staff here. I enjoy a range of sports, being creative and dance. I look forward to working alongside you all.

Room 15: Tahnya Mekkelholt
I am lucky enough to have recently joined the talented team at Northcote Intermediate and I am loving it! Prior to Northcote Intermediate I was at a junior high school for about 6 years.
I am passionate about teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum. I am particularly interested in literacy, mathematics and visual art. I recently completed extra study where I focused on integrating literacy throughout the curriculum to improve learning, culture, and bilingualism. I think it is particularly important to help learners see the connections between what we do in school and how it connects to their home and the wider world. I am motivated to build learners confidence in themselves and help them reach their potential.
I look forward to getting to know and continuing to working alongside the amazing learners, whanau, staff, and community.

Room 16: Becks Spurdle
This year I am very excited to be joining the team at Northcote Intermediate once again. I started at Northcote Intermediate back in 2009 as a beginning teacher, fresh from Auckland University. At the start of 2013 I decided to leave New Zealand and experience living and working overseas in London.
During my time in London and travelling around Europe I saw beautiful places, met amazing and diverse people and had many once in a lifetime experiences.
Teaching was the one and only profession I wanted to get in to after my secondary schooling. I am so lucky to have had the support of both the wonderful staff and students at Northcote to see me move from a beginning teacher to an experienced, confident teacher. So obviously I did not hesitate to say yes when I was asked to come back!
I am looking forward to the year ahead, getting to know new students, parents, caregivers and being involved in fantastic teaching and learning throughout the school.

Room 17: Vaha Fapiano
Greetings to everyone. This will be my eighth year at Northcote Intermediate. I moved up from Palmerston North aiming for a year off from the Ruahine Ranges and eight years later I am still here.
Northcote Intermediate offers so many opportunities not only for the students to excel but myself as well. I am enjoying the outstanding support of all the staff members and the excitement of creating a learning environment for all students. I have a great passion for sport. I believe every student is capable of improving their personal best as long as they are given a chance.
Media and Design: Jon Pickford
After a career which has allowed me to teach in many schools, it always seemed like a matter of time before I would return to my favourite school community here at NIS. Our school is a very different place to the one I left in 2008; Northcote has become the intermediate of choice in our area and I couldn't be prouder to be back to play my part as we continue to grow and excel.
Intermediate school is a dynamic place where students start to get an idea of their identity and where they fit into our world. In 2017 I will be teaching Media & Design, and I'm lucky to be heading our school inquiry into the evolution of our Specialist Classes as we work towards creating the best Tech / Arts programme in Auckland. I will also be overseeing our Gifted & Talented programme (GATE), and making sure that our talented academics, musicians and sports students have the perfect opportunities at NIS.
I'm looking forward to working with you all, and be part of the amazing NIS team.

Music: Luke Grayson
I am privileged to have been serving at NIS as a Music Specialist since 2009, having completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education at Auckland
University two years prior. I oversee the Music programme, some of the music-related GATE (Gifted and Talented) groups and administer the school website.
Music and the Performing Arts have been a passion of mine since childhood and I have been involved in a wide range of bands, ensembles and various musical projects. I have been teaching music to children and adults in both a private and itinerant capacity since 2004.
Working at NIS is both challenging and enjoyable, with never a dull moment among the wide variety of ethnicities, cultures and family backgrounds in both our students and staff.
This year I have reduced my hours due to the demands of my website design business, a rural subdivision I am overseeing and most importantly, my growing family.

Counsellor: Liz Summerville
Hi. My name is Liz Summerville. This school is amazing in that it has provided a School Counsellor for many years, as another one of the many ways of supporting the children, staff and parents.
I have been in this position since 1996, which shows how much I love it. The kids are fantastic and the wide range of cultural mix is exciting and fun. My own children came to this school and enjoyed it. They are in their 30's now so my connection with Northcote Intermediate goes way back, and as such I feel very passionate about our school.
