YOUNG LEADERS' DAY 2010

“Plug into your potential”

In the early hours of the morning of Thursday 6th May, 16 student leaders of Northcote Intermediate School attended the 10th annual Halogen Young Leaders day held at the Logan Campbell Centre in Greenlane.

Scott Wilson, Marshal Riley, Detlef Hadfield and Jordan Appleton were chosen by the Halogen officials to be mike runners for the morning. They had to move around the Logan Campbell Centre going between schools so that students could ask questions of the presenters. They proudly represented our school and everyone knew who they were as they were all wearing the school’s brand new jackets. We thank you for allowing us to wear them – we enjoyed wearing them and our teachers got compliments on how smart we all looked.

We were entertained by a variety of inspirational speakers throughout the day. The most memorable speakers were Nick Tuitasi (an ex policeman who had 25 years experience on the job before retiring and becoming involved with the youth of New Zealand) and Glen Osbourne (an ex All Black).

We were given many inspirational messages throughout the day by all presenters. The ones that stood out for us and the ones that we wish to bring back to school and share with all students are;

- Life is never easy

- If you really want something you have to work for it

- You have only failed if you give up

And most profoundly

- You are your biggest barrier to success

“Guard your thoughts as your thoughts become words
Guard your words as your words become actions
Guard your actions as your actions become habits
Guard your habits as your habits become your character
Guard your character as that determines who you are and your destiny.”

The student leadership group feel that these messages are important to us all and will guide us all through our lives. The inspirational theme of the day of ‘Plugging into your PoTENtial’ will help us to grow into better leaders and global citizens. As Rob Harley (a well known journalist) said “the choices you make determine you” – we all know how to make the right choices and as leaders in our school we wish to help others in making the right decisions for them and our school as a whole.

As a student leadership team we feel we have more to contribute to our school and the Northcote community as a whole. After the Young Leaders day we realise that it is up to us to make a difference and that is what we plan to do.

We wish to thank the Board of Trustees and Ms Neal for making it possible for us to experience this amazing and inspirational event and for purchasing badges for us so that we have a lasting momentum of the day.

We also wish to thank Jerry Hay, Emanuel Rubaduka, Miss Gardiner and Mrs Gamble for transporting us to and from the event.
