Student Leaders 2019
Our composite Year 7 and 8 classes create the perfect environment to develop student leaders at NIS. Students have a number of opportunities to develop leadership through various layers in our school:
Chelsea & Jacob (Head Girl and Head Boy)
Kolotalita & Toby (Deputy Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy)
Beyond our classroom progress, NIS students have a number of opportunities to enrich their learning and extend themselves:
- ICAS Digital Technologies / Science / Spelling / Writing / Maths / English
- Mathex (problem solving competitions)
- Otago Problem Solving (Maths)
- NIWA North Harbour Science and Technology Fair
- EPro8 Problem Solving / Innovation Challenge
- School Speech Competition
GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)
As well as extending our students through the classroom programme, we strive to provide opportunities for NIS students to enrich and accelerate their learning in extension groups.
Our students are encouraged to celebrate their own and others' cultures by joining one of the following groups:
- Kapa Haka Group (Maori)
- Pasifika Group
- Lion Dance (Mandarin)
In Term 1, all of our Maori and Pasifika students are invited to join Mr Pickford, Ms Fapiano, Miss Spurdle, Mr King, Miss Singer, Mrs Day-Jones, Mrs Penman and Miss Nathan to attend Tuesday Mana mornings at 7.45am. This provides a launchpad to building a supportive culture where our Kapa Haka and Pasifika groups can emerge. Whanau are encouraged to join us, and we will often provide toast as we talk about things going on around the school.
NIS students are encouraged to get involved in a variety of different sports during their time at NIS. Please see our Sports Prospectus below for information about the different sporting opportunities.
The visual and performance arts provides a vital creative outlet for our 21st century learners. Please see our Arts Prospectus below for an overview of the opportunities available for your child at NIS:
